A lawn is only as good as what is under it. For new turf we strip the old grass, loosen the clay, spread sandy loam and level it so water runs away from the house. Then we lay buffalo, kikuyu or a fescue blend, depending on your shade and how hard the lawn is used. If the lawn you have is thin but mostly alive, a renovation is cheaper: we aerate, top dress and oversow, and it thickens up over six to eight weeks.
What is included
- Old lawn stripped and removed from site
- Clay loosened, with gypsum added where a test shows it helps
- 50 to 75 mm of sandy loam, levelled and firmed
- Turf supplied and laid the day it is cut
- Starter fertiliser and the first full watering
- A week by week watering plan for the first six weeks
How we do it
-
Choose the grass
We look at the shade, the traffic and your watering habits, then recommend a grass and tell you why.
-
Build the base
The old lawn comes off, the ground is loosened and loam is spread and levelled to fall away from the house.
-
Lay and roll
Turf is laid in a brick pattern with tight joins, rolled, and watered within half an hour.
-
Check in
We come back at two weeks and at six weeks to check the roots have taken and to answer questions.
Signs you need this
- Bare patches return in the same spots every summer
- The lawn is boggy for days after rain
- More weeds and moss than grass
- The ground is so hard a garden fork will not go in
- Grass has thinned out under a tree as the canopy has grown
